Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. (I Corinthians 12:12 NIV)
The human body is a good illustration of what God’s church is like. On the one hand the body is diverse: there are many different parts with their own specific functions, and they do not look at all like each other. Yet on the other hand there is obvious unity in the human body. The different parts are so closely dependant on each other that none of them can live if separated from the others. Also, there is unity of function: all the body parts work together to create one healthy person. God’s church is like this. It is made up of individuals who have very different gifts and personalities, but who all work together under the control of the Holy Spirit to bring the message of Jesus Crucified for sin to the entire world.
