Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (I Corinthians 12:7 NIV)
The verse above explains the reasons why the Whole Spirit gives gifts to individual Christians: it is for the common good of the church. Sadly, it is very normal and human for us to want certain gifts of the Spirit for the wrong reasons. We might want God to give us the gift of healings and miracles, or tongues and prophecies out of our own selfish motives. We may want these gifts in order to validate our own high opinion of ourselves and to impress others. These great gifts certainly come with a lot of temptation involved. But God, knowing our selfish tendencies, often refuses to give His faithful children gifts that will cause them to sin or to be puffed up. We need to take great care to use every gift that God gives us to edify the church in complete humility, and not to elevate ourselves in the church at the expense of others.
