Men and Women are Spiritually Equal Before God, and Depend On Each Other

Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. (I Corinthians 11:11-12 NIV)

In my recent posts we have been discussing how the Bible commands women to submit to and respect the authority of their husbands. Now, in our two verses for today, Paul takes the time to clarify that men and women are spiritually equal before God. One is not superior to the other; they simply have different gifts and roles. Neither should become arrogant, since they both depend on each other in the Lord. The first man was created before the first woman, who came from his rib. However, every man who has come into the world since has been born of woman, so there would obviously be no men in this world if there were no women. I think Paul is making the point here that the husband’s god-given authority is nothing for him to boast about since everything comes from God. Nor should the woman resent her position, since that came from God as well. We must all love each other and use the gifts that God has given to encourage and aid each other in our Christian walk. God does not play favorites between the sexes: all of God’s children are equal before Him, as the Apostle Paul wrote elsewhere:

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28 NIV)
