We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. (I Corinthians 10:9)
Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God, He is God. He was always God, He is the same God that led the children of Israel out of Egypt over 3,000 years ago, and used poisonous snakes to kill some of them (see above). Some people, who are unfamiliar with the Bible, claim that Jesus is not like the God of the Old Testament. They claim that he is much more loving and peaceful than “Jehovah” of the Old Testament Scriptures.
But they are wrong on 2 accounts. First of all, they are wrong when they assert that “Jehovah” is unloving. The God of the Old Testament has always been merciful, and has forgiven many repentant sinners of many horrible sins (some of those who were bitten by snakes were healed by God). Secondly, they are wrong that Jesus is only forgiving. Jesus will most certainly judge sin if it is not repented of. A righteous God can do no less. We can be glad that Christ is both loving enough to forgive those who repent, and righteous enough to punish the wicked who will not desist from harming the innocent.
