Human beings cannot figure out the mind of God. Obviously, God is way above us, and no computer system can decode the way He thinks. Perhaps this is why we as human beings have such a hard time understanding concepts such as God’s “Election,” and “Foreknowledge.” God’s Foreknowledge–His intimate knowledge of human beings before they ever existed, and His election, choosing humans to be saved, is something that Happens in God’s thoughts, and it should not surprise us that we cannot understand God’s thoughts:
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. (I Corinthians 2:10-11 NIV).
So only the Holy Spirit knows the thoughts of God. However, this does not mean that we can never see into God’s mind. As Christians we can and do see into God’s mind to an extent: we can see the great love He has for us and His plan to save sinners through the blood of Jesus Christ. But since the thoughts of God are known only to the Spirit of God, we cannot understand even these fundamental things unless it has been revealed to us by the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 2:9). Knowledge of the ways of God is a gift that we can only receive by the Holy Spirit, we cannot figure it out with our own power.
