As we begin reading the final chapter of the Bible we continue to see that sin and death will finally be defeated, and that God will grant eternal healing to those who have loved Him:
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. (Revelation 22:1-3a NIV)
We see here in this depiction of God’s eternal heaven, that there will be a River of Life flowing down the center street of the city. The water of life comes directly from God, and the Lamb (i.e Jesus). There is no other source of life for mankind. Once again, this passage, like many others in Revelation, Jesus is depicted on the throne with God the Father. This is because Jesus Himself is God. The Three are one.
It is interesting to note that in this city the “tree of life” will be present. This is presumably the same tree that God caused to grow in the garden of Eden back in Genesis chapter 2. After the fall of man God forbade humans to eat from this tree, Because man must not/ cannot have eternal life as long as he is tainted with sin. But true believers will be allowed to eat of the tree of life in the New Jerusalem because all of their sins have been completely washed away by the blood of Christ.
This tree will produce “twelve crops of fruit.” The number twelve probably represents the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles (see 21:12,14). It is a reminder of how God has used Israel and the Church to draw true believers to Himself. The actual saints who are present with God in this city will be representatives of every nation (see Matthew 24:14, Revelation 7:9). Thus this tree of life will bring “healing of the nations.” It was never God’s intention to save only the Jewish people.
At that time in that place “no longer will there be any curse.” The curse of sin will be completely healed. Our guilt will be gone. If you want to be there, in a state of perfect communion with God and the saints, then you must repent now and be washed in the blood of the Lamb.
