God’s temple is mentioned many times in the Bible. The earthly temple was built as a physical place on Earth where man could go to seek God. This temple will apparently be rebuilt in the future during the 1,000 year reign of Jesus on Earth in Jerusalem. In addition, there is apparently some sort of temple in heaven right now. This temple is mentioned frequently throughout the book of Revelation (see Revelation 8:3-5, 11:19, 15:8).
However, there were be no temple as such in the future heaven, the New Jerusalem where all believers will spend eternity with God. The Apostle John gives us a very brief, simple explanation for this:
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. (Revelation 21:22)
The reason for the existence of the temple, in the Old Testament times, can be summed up by saying that it was designed was to bring human beings closer to God. However, in eternity there will be no need for this kind of structure because we will already be as close to God as possible. There will no longer be anything separating us from Him. Therefore the temple will be obsolete because our relationship with the “Lord God Almighty” and “the Lamb” (Jesus Christ, who is both God and the Son of God) will be perfect. We will experience unrestricted fellowship with Him for eternity.
