Why Jesus will reign on Earth For a Thousand Years

Imagine a world with a just government, and with no disease. The prophets tell us that this world will be a reality some day soon. The Great Battle of Armaggeddon will be very terrible but it will be short. Afterwards the Devil will be bound for a thousand years, so that he cannot create more mischief:

And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time. (Revelation 20:1-3 NIV)

There are many dear Christians who think that this passage is only symbolic. They claim that there is no reason for Jesus to set up a kingdom on Earth for a thousand years. They say that it would be better for us to go straight to heaven.

But I disagree. God’s purpose for created the world was to seek children for himself; humans who would believe in Him and repent of their sins. The millenium will be a period where Jesus will gather great quantities of children to Himself. They will be born in a world that is safe without injustice and disease (Isaiah 11:1-10). They will be able to learn about who Jesus is, and they will also be able to learn about the mistakes that humans have made in the past. Many will believe and become members of God’s family; perhaps even the majority! It will be a good thing. I am glad that it is part of God’s plan.
