After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:
Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,
2 for true and just are his judgments.
He has condemned the great prostitute
who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.
He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”
3 And again they shouted:
The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”
4 The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:
“Amen, Hallelujah!” (Revelation 19:1-4 NIV)
In chapters 16 and 17 we saw how in the end times the great, wicked city of Babylon will be destroyed by an earthquake (Revelation 16:19) and an armed invasion (Revelation 17:16). But Babylon’s punishment will not stop at that time. “The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.” This probably means that those who committed sin in Babylon will be punished in the lake of fire for eternity (Revelation 20:15, 21:8).
This punishment will extend to all “Babylonians” of all ages, regardless of whether or not they have physically lived in the earthly city of Babylon. You are a spiritual Babylonian if you reject the message by which God gives grace to the world, and instead choose to honor items or false gods above the one true God.
