A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[a] which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.” (Revelation 14:8 NIV)
In the end times God will judge the city of Babylon. At that time it will probably be the commercial center of the revived Roman Empire (Revelation 18:9-20). Yet in a broader sense Babylon represents all the Gentile kingdoms/empires of history. In fact, it represents human culture as a whole. We have all fallen away from God and worshipped other things (idols, wealth, beauty) in the place of God. Therefore, by rejecting God we have drunken of the “adulteries” of Babylon. God refers to any worship of anything besides Himself as adultery, since He has always intended us for communion with Him, and therefore He considers us as “cheating” on Him when we do not give Him the attention that His Holiness deserves.
God loves you and wants you to spend eternity with Him. Therefore, repent of your spiritual “adulteries” and idols and return to God. Love Him, serve Him, worship Him. It is better to experience His unbounded love than His unbounded wrath.
