And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying:
“We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty,
the One who is and who was,
because you have taken your great power
and have begun to reign.
18 The nations were angry,
and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,
and for rewarding your servants the prophets
and your people who revere your name,
both great and small—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.” (Revelation 11:16-18)
In this scene we see the twenty-four elders in heaven praising God after He declares the kingdom of His Messiah (Jesus) at the end of the tribulation period (see verse 15). The elders praise Him because:
For taking power and beginning His reign. For many millennial the Earth has suffered under selfish, ruthless, unjust rulers. But after the tribulation God will take direct control of Earth and establish a perfect kingdom of love, mercy, and justice.
Because His wrath has come. For the last several thousand years many people have seemed to have gotten away with injustice. But God will bring down His righteous wrath on unrepentant sinners. He will show His power by destroying those who destroy the Earth. By doing so He will avenge the martyrs who died for doing what was right, good, loving, and true.
Because the time has finally come for rewarding His servants the prophets and the rest of His people who revere His name. It is a great and wonderful thing for God to eternally reward those who have sacrificed themselves for Him.
