The Day When Suicide Is Impossible

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. (Revelation 9:1-6)

We see in this passage the first of the three “woes” that will come upon the Earth during the tribulation period. In those days locust-like beings, possibly inhabited by demons, will attack unbelievers living on the Earth. They will not attack trees or grass; their goal is to provide as much direct torment and pain to humans as possible. Those who receive the sting of these scorpions will be in horrible pain for five months and will be unable to escape by killing themselves.

The lesson to learn here is that there are very real, powerful forces in the world whose main objective is to directly hurt as many people as possible. God, in His grace has protected us from them for a long time, and has provided a way for our sins to be forgiven. However, those who want nothing to do with God will someday be allowed to experience the alternative.

Come to God. He is good.
