Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!” (Revelation 5:11-12 NIV)
Now, as John watches this heavenly scene unfold, he realizes that there are more than just the 24 elders and 4 living creatures praising the Lamb, but all the hosts of angels, numbering in the many millions, were also gathered around the throne praising Jesus. Jesus, having lovingly offered Himself as a sacrifice for mere humans is “worthy… to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise.” Jesus is exalted here because, existing fully as God, He chose to take on human form and sacrifice himself for others (Phillippians 2:4). Jesus did not seek to exalt Himself. Many human rulers do the opposite, seeking to exalt themselves rather than wait for God to exalt them. Many of these rulers will some day be punished by the Lamb who was Slain.
