Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.
Our world is an exceedingly wicked place, and it deserves to be judged for its sins. The scroll presented here has seven seals, which represents both God’s perfection and His just judgment on sinners. This scroll details the just judgment that God will bring upon the unrepentant inhabitants of the Earth. But no one besides Jesus is qualified to unleash this judgment, or even to open the scroll and look to see what is inside it. Neither the 24 elders nor the four living creatures, as magnificent as they are, are qualified for this. In the end Jesus is the only one who can open the scroll so that the Apostle John could see what was inside it, and pass it along to us, so that we could know ahead of time what will happen in the last days.
