In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
“‘Holy, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,’
who was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:6-8)
As John proceeds with His description of the throne scene he brings our attention to four “living creatures” that look very different than any creature that dwells on Earth. These are obviously angelic beings of some kind. I, for one, do not really know how to interpret all their various characteristics. Like the elders, in fact like all created beings, their primary task is to bring glory to God. They never stop praising God “day and night.” They bring attention to three attributes of God:
He is HOLY above all else. This word is mentioned three times in a row, perhaps once for each member of the Godhead.
He is ALMIGHTY.
He is also eternal, the one who “was, and is, and is to come.”
