“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives. (Revelation 2:12-13 NIV)
In this passage the Church of Pergamum gets high praise from Christ because they did not forsake their faith even when it caused one of them to be martyred. God expects us to die, if necessary, for the one who died for us.
This prospect is intimidating, to say the least. I do not naturally have the courage to die for Christ. But I am confident that God, in His grace, will provide me the courage I need when/if the time comes. I cannot do it on my own, but “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
