A True Jew Is One Who Serves The One True God In His Heart

To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. (Revelation 2:9-10)

The Christians in Smyrna were attacked and persecuted by those “who say they are Jews and are not.” They were probably real Jews in the sense that they were born into Jewish families, followed all the customs and were circumcised. However, the Jewish people were supposed to be a people who follow God in their hearts. These Jews showed themselves not to be true followers of God in that they were opposed to the revealing of Christ as the Messiah who had been prophesied in the Old Testament. The words of Jeremiah apply to these enemies of Christianity in Smyrna:

Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
circumcise your hearts,
you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire
because of the evil you have done—
burn with no one to quench it. (Jeremiah 4:4)

Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer (Deuteronomy 10:16)
