Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. (Revelation 2:4-5 NIV)
Your church needs to repent if it has lost it’s first love, that is, if it has sidelined true worship of Christ from the heart and abandoned it’s focus on how He paid for our sins with His blood. Many churches today believe that they can “improve” be focussing less on calvary, and more on the lifestyle needs of the individual. But any abandonment of the doctrine of Christ can prove fatal to any church. The church of Ephesus was by and large a good church, yet Christ threatened to “remove your lampstand from it’s place” if they did not return to their first love.
I want to add, though, that even giving lip service to correct, orthodox doctrine does not mean that you have kept your first love. It must be genuine love from the soul.
