Unless the Lord Almighty
had left us some survivors,
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah. (Isaiah 1:9 NIV)
The previous verse tells how foreign armies had ravaged Judah because of their sins. But verse 9 explains that Judah had survived only because of God’s mercy. They could have easily been destroyed. Many strong enemies had come up against them during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (see verse 1), but they had survived.
