Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”
49 The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” (John 4:46-49)
Everyone wants to see God do spectacular things. When Jesus came to Cana there was no doubt a crowd gathered around Him waiting for Him to do another one of His miracles. They viewed Him as some kind of traveling show. Jesus was apparrantly disgusted with the way they were behaving.
But the royal official who came to Jesus for help didn’t care about signs or wonders. All He cared about was his son’s life. Rather than demand a sign of Jesus, he tearfully asks Jesus for help.
We must be more like the royal official and less like the crowd. We need to ask for God’s help; not because we want Him to put on a show for us, but because we NEED His help!
If you are someone who is desperately searching for truth, then pray to God and ask Him to give you what you need. DO NOT ask for a sign. DO NOT tell Him what to do. Just ask Him to help you knowing that you are unable to help yourself.
