Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country. (J0hn 4:44)
When Jesus walked on Earth He got very little respect from people in His home town of Nazareth. Many there refused to believe in Him, despite all the miracles he did. The reason for this is because of familiarity: many people have the least respect for those they are the most familiar with. They are more likely to trust “mysterious” people they don’t know very well.
Don’t be like the unbelievers in Jesus’ home town of Nazareth. Don’t disrespect people or take them for granted just because you are familiar with them. After all, there may be some of God’s prophets in your own village. By “prophet” I mean a person who has a real relationship with the one true God.
Here is how to spot the prophets in your village. God’s prophets will display the following characteristics.
1. True love. God is love. (I John 4:8). Those who are God’s prophets will be truly compassionate for other people. They will give food and shelter to their enemies, and help out those who are in need, even when no one is watching.
2. True Faith. God’s prophets will remain satisfied even in time of greatest need. They know that God is in control, and they submit to him.
3. Speak truth. God hates lies. His prophets hate lies as well.
