How Jesus Baptizes Christians

When Jesus lived on Earth He did not physically baptize a single person with water (John 4:2). He always let His disciples do that. Instead, as John the Baptist said, His job was to baptize with the Holy Spirit:

“And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ ” (John 1:33)

Jesus does not need physical contact with us in order to baptize us with the Holy Spirit. Jesus was not physically present when the apostles received the gift of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), or the gentiles at Cornelius’ house (Acts 10:44). Nevertheless, the baptism of the soul is something that is done directly by Jesus, not by the people who baptize us with water. Jesus baptizes us by spiritual contact when we believe in Him.
