“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? (John 3:9-10)
In this passage Jesus is critical of Nicodemus for not understanding that human beings need to be born again. As a religious leader of Israel he should have known that everyone is sinful and need to be changed. They are not good enough to be accepted by the Holy God of the Torah unless they are “born again”.
Contemporary religious leaders also have a responsibility to understand being “born again.” Any pastor who does not teach the doctrine of John chapter 3 does not have anything useful to give to his congregation. He should resign from the ministry, since he does not have the answers to the greatest questions of all.
