“The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” (John 2:18-22)
COMMENTARY: Christ’s resurrection from the dead was proof that He had the God-given authority that He claimed to have. The sign that he gave his critics was not immediate (it happened three years later), but it proved his authority without a doubt and should have produced faith in those who had previously doubted him. However, they continued to disbelieve in Him because they never were willing to believe in him in the first place.
Jesus probably did not do a miracle right away in this instance because it was wrong for humans to demand a miracle from God. God is loving and he has lovingly offered many miracles and signs as proof of His message to mankind. However, He will not take orders for us. Jesus lovingly did lots of important miracles for those who begged him in humility, but not for those who demanded it of him.
