Why Other People Deserve Your Respect

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” (James 3:9-10).

Other people deserve your respect because they have been made in the likeness of God. Every person is inherently valuable, even those who hurt you, lie to you, and mistreat you.

Therefore you should not curse or swear at other people, even when they do wrong to you. Instead you should love them the way that God loved you. After all, you are a sinner too.

Love your enemies and pray for them that they might repent and be forgiven of their sins.

You are right that we should try to earn other people’s respect by being honest.

My point, however, is that everyone deserves a basic level of respect from us just because they are humans. To be human is to be special.

I agree. However,I also believe that even the worst people, the people who are not kind to others deserve some respect simply because they are humans and humans are inherently special.

It is important to show love to everyone, so that bitter, hurting, people will have a chance to see your compassion and change.
