“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (I Peter 5:8-9)
I recently had a debate with someone on this blog who felt that it is OK for men to fantasize about women they were not married to in order to keep from doing the real thing. She seemed to be argueing that men who try to resist the urge to think wicked thoughts will ultimately fall harder than men who do not fight it.
I disagree. I think that when it comes to sin it is always better to keep fighting the urge. The more you give in, the more momentum the sin gains in your life, like a semi-trailer careening out of control down a mountain. Therefore, when Satan tempts us to do wrong we need to fight back. We have no power in ourselves to defeat Satan, but God can easily defeat him for us.
