Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him her lord

“For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.” (II Peter 3:5-6 NIV)

Here is yet another politically incorrect verse. It is offensive to both men and women.

It is offensive to women because it tells them that they must care more for their husbands than themselves. Submitting to authority does not come easily to any human being, but it is essential. We cannot love God or other people if we do not submit to authority.

This verse also makes men uncomfortable. Why? Because a lot of men know inside that they do not deserve to be submitted to! Women, if you submit to your man and he is a jerk, your submission will make him feel guilty. Hopefully it will persuade him to change his ways and repent of his sins.

Of course, we do not submit to authority only because we want them to learn from our example and change their ways. We do it because it is the right thing to do. We must submit to those over us (parents, governments, etc) even if they do not change their self-serving ways.

It may be politically incorrect by today’s standards, but who changed? Us or God? Thanks for not being afraid to touch on a “touchy” subject!
