God’s commandments are only burdensome for unbelievers

“In fact, this is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome,” (I John 5:3)

There are many people who try to get to heaven by their own righteous works. They think they can get to heaven on their own merit. But they are wrong, and they are grumpy people. They are constantly trying to keep God’s law out of fear, but deep down in their heart they know they are failing.

But a true Christian is a joyful person. That is because we are not trying to obey God in order to earn our salvation; we are obeying God because He has already given it to us. When we repent of our sins and believe in Jesus for salvation, God changes us inside out through the power of His Holy Spirit. We no longer do good deeds out of a feeling of compulsion, but we are motivated by joy and gratitude. Suddenly we appreciate the fact that following God’s commands is the only worthwhile thing that we can do with our lives, and it is not burdensome for us to serve Him.
